New Sustainability Analyst Stephanie Del Rosario

Every day Stephanie De Rosario wakes up knowing she can make this world a better place. Being a sustainability analyst is a big job to have at a college. She is a full-time student and full-time staff member at Cal State Fullerton. Before she started college, she did not think about being involved with sustainability, which refers to the capacity for the biosphere and human civilization to coexist.

Del Rosario got offered an internship at farmers’ market. She helped out with all sorts of projects there, some of the projects involved recycling, zero waste, and food waste management. What this means is that she is involved in waste prevention programs.

“I first studied humanities at UC Irvine, took a few courses there and got a certification for recycling and waste,” Del Rosario said. “That is where my interest in the environment and sustainability began.”

Of course Del Rosario cannot do all of this sustainability work on her own, she has to have some help. One of her co-workers, Dan Miranda, assists her with the projects and events at the school. A few weeks ago, they were doing a food waste program in front of the Gastronome located in the student housing area on campus.

“We help each other out with different events,” Miranda said. “As the campus waste management specialist, she is doing a fantastic job coming into a position that was vacated for a while. Things started to pile up and she was filling in the gaps that were left empty. We all help each other out, I help Stephanie with tabling as well.”

Del Rosario grew up in North Orange County her whole life. She did not get into sustainability until college. She is also a new student at Cal State Fullerton only being at this school for just three months. Last month she hosted the biggest event so far this school year, the Titan Clean Air Day.

“The sustainability office partnered with parking a transportation,” she said. “This event raises awareness to clean the air. It is two departments getting this all together and then just also from the reception from the students because always at the end of the day it is about awareness and education for the students. We want to make sure they come away from the event with a little more education than before. Overall that event did really well especially because we got so many pledges from that event that day.”

Del Rosario and her co-workers partnered with Associated Students Inc. on campus October 21. Another co-worker of Stephanie, Janet Purchase, is very excited about this school year and to be working with Stephanie.

“One of the biggest things here is that you need to be the voice for sustainability” Purchase said. “She has been just like an Energizer bunny. She jumps right in and takes things on, really getting the word. One thing I was really amazed about her is that she can easily connect with people because she makes contacts all over the place so that she can bring other people in. I am very lucky to be working with somebody like her.”

Del Rosario has only been here since July which is not that long ago. But for her, she got the hang of it right away and loves everything about Cal State Fullerton.

“Overall my impression here is that it is a very collaborate group of people” She said. “So far everyone here has been so helpful so no matter who I speak with. All of the departments like the directors, analyst, coordinates, student assistants and interns have been great. Even the students on campus I love, everyone is very receptive to learning more about sustainability and the environment. If I had to describe this place with one word it would be positive. Connecting people to resources and education about sustainability makes me very happy, I love to help out people.”
