Be The Lighthouse.

A close friend asked me the other day what helped me get out of my dark hole that I crawled into a few years ago. She had a friend who was struggling and wanted to know how to help. I paused to think (not something I do often). What had helped me get out? What had made me want to get myself out?

I remember that time, and specifically that night, vividly. A friend had gotten me through. She showed up and sat with me. I had called for help and she had shown up. Coming out of it again felt a lot like what I imagine learning to walk was like. It was parents and friends calling encouragingly and trips and falls and stumbles and shaky legs for a while. Sometimes I was too tired and so I crawled. Sometimes I took a few steps, and everyone cheered. It was bumpy and rocky and imperfect, but it was the moments of joy that friends shared that reminded me I could want that again. They reminded me that life was beautiful again.

During a call with a psychic around that same time, she told me that I needed to be the Lighthouse. She explained that when there is a storm at sea, and boats are trying to make it to the shore, it does no one any good if the Lighthouse jumps in to save them, snuffing out its own light. Then, they both might drown. No, it is the Lighthouse that reminded the boats at sea where dry land was, guiding them home and reminding them of lighter times. It was the Lighthouse that had saved me. It is the Lighthouse that would save others.

In moments of joy, I text my friends. I love to share my happiness and love with others. To share my happiness and share my gratitude. I love my friends and my life without abandon, and I never forget to tell those I love that I love them. For that matter, I want you to know that I love you. It is the sharing of this joy and elated light that reminds those in the darkness that they can climb out. That with the help of professionals and friends and the assistance of various tools like meditation, movement, therapy, journaling, etc., they can pull themselves out. I stand by the fact that there is no greater accomplishment than saving yourself. It has been my greatest achievement so far. I think it might always be.

Now, more than ever, I find that Lighthouses and dreamers are what’s getting me through my days. The hope and the belief in a better and brighter future are what’s inspiring me to get up, to write, and to dream of this better world, this brighter tomorrow. It is this brightness, this light, that is going to get us through this pandemic. I believe it is what gets us through all dark times and makes us want to keep going. It is our greatest strength and our most valuable superpower as humans. It is the power to hope, to dream, and to create a better reality. It is the power to laugh and to love. Be the Lighthouse. Be the light you wish to see in the world.
