How to be a good team member?

When it comes to group work, people often fear of having bad teammates that they don’t like to work with. Therefore, it is important to know what kind of person other people would like to work with.

I like to work with someone who is hardworking. If I can have a smart teammate, that’s great, but if the person doesn’t do any work, I would rather choose a teammate who is not as smart but is hardworking. It is also important to be a person who doesn’t procrastinate work. I particularly like people who finish their work early so that we can have time to check if there is anything we need to improve. Another important point to mention is to be someone who doesn’t ‘disappear’. A lot of group discussion happens online via messages, however some people always ignore those messages and just disappeared. It is easy to end up that this single person doesn’t do any work. For me, it is important that group members divide work and every one do some of the work so that the work is not done by one certain person.

I see myself as a hardworking teammate. Though sometimes I might be too shy to talk when our group is discussing, I will always finish the work if they assign any to me. Moreover, since I am an international student, and not a native speaker, when I am grouped up with native speakers, I will become really nervous and not confident. This makes me afraid of giving out any ideas. However, being too shy and nervous is the only reasons that might make others don’t want to work with me. Apart from those weak points, I am a good teammate who doesn’t criticize other’s idea, always finishes the work on time and always try my best on every project.

In the future, to know whether I am someone who my team member find it easy to work with, I will be cooperative and be the kind of team member I hope to have. At the end, when the project is done, I will ask my team members how they found working with me and ask if there is anything I need to improve.
