Korean Detention Centre Puts Inmate In Solitary Confinement For Being Gay

A detention facility in Daegu, South Korea, has reportedly placed a male inmate in solitary confinement for being gay, according to local civic rights groups.

Detention centres are designed to house unconvicted prisoners.

In an alleged hand-written letter, ‘A’ asks to be treated the same as other inmates.

The local NGOs held a press conference in front of Daegu Detention Center on July 26, stating:

The centre told the media outlet:

The local NGOs have tried to meet with the Daegu Correctional Service and Daegu Detention Center, but such requests have allegedly been denied.

The groups plan to submit a petition to the National Human Rights Commission of Korea against the head of the detention facility.

South Korea currently has no law to protect vulnerable groups including sexual minorities against discrimination. Several attempts at enacting such a law have been met with severe opposition from homophobic “Christian” lobby groups.

Daegu is known to be South Korea’s most conservative city.
