Sacred Wedding Rituals of Gujarati Matrimony

The Gol Dhana is also known as the engagement ceremony. Bride’s family with the bride and few relatives visit Grooms House for the engagement ceremony before two days of the wedding. There, the bride and groom exchange rings in the presence of family members, then the member’s present gifts and money (Shagun).

This function is done by the bride’s family. The beautiful designs are applied on the bride’s hands with henna and other female family members of the family also applied henna on their hands.

Gujarati play Gaavra at the sangeet ceremony. Songs and dances are performed after Henna.

Hindu Priest worships Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha is known as “Pratham Pujya” who has removed the negativity or obstacle coming in the way.

This pooja is performed to acquire peace and calm in the house for a happy married life.

It is the haldi ceremony where the bride’s families’ members applied turmeric paste on her body. The turmeric paste is a mixture of sandalwood, turmeric, rosewater and essential oil.

The bride’s maternal uncle represents gifts her sarees, bangles, and jewelry along with many other things.

Before the baraat sets out of his house, the groom’s sister waives coins wrapped in a cloth over his head

The couple exchanges the flower garlands. This indicates the wedding day ceremonies start.

It is one o the best moment where the bride’s father ultimately hands over the daughter to the Groom and blesses them to start a new life.

After kanyadaan, Gujarati wedding has four pheras rather than the seven. The priest chants a Hindu mantra, while the couples take rounds around the holy fire.

This is a fun ceremony where the bride’s mother tries to grab his nose when the groom touches the mother in law feet for blessing.

This is another funny ritual where the groom catches hold of his mother in law saree and asks for gifts. Then the mother in law represents a gift and cash to the groom.

This is the emotional ceremony and it is time to say goodbye her daughter. The brides take rice in her hands and throw it back in four times in fourth directions without looking. This indicates that the house will always fill with prosperity. The Mother tries to catch this rice in her pallu.

This is the time when the couple enters the house after the wedding. The bride kicks the handi(full of rice) with the right foot and enters the house.
