Jamie Malonzo Begged Off From SEA Games

Gilas Pilipinas is set to compete in the 32nd SEA in Cambodia this May. The team had high hopes of redemption after a disappointing performance in the 2019 edition of the biennial tournament, where they settled for a bronze medal. However, their plans for the upcoming competition have hit a snag as Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s swingman Jamie Malonzo begged off from the team.

Malonzo’s absence comes as a surprise since he was considered a strong candidate for the SEA Games-bound Gilas squad. The 26-year-old had an impressive stint in the sixth window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, showcasing his athleticism and size as a 6-foot-7 forward. He would have been a valuable addition to Gilas’ wings, but unfortunately, he cannot suit up for the tournament.

Veteran sports analyst Quinito Henson was the first to break the news on Twitter, revealing that Malonzo would miss the SEA Games due to a family matter. The swingman reportedly had a long-standing commitment to attend his close nephew’s wedding in the United States, which prevented him from joining the national team in Cambodia.

‘Jamie Malonzo has spoken to Gilas coach Chot [Reyes] to beg off from SEA Games because of a longstanding commitment to a close nephew to attend his wedding in [the] US,” Henson tweeted.

With or without Malonzo, Gilas is expected to put up a strong fight in Cambodia and showcase the talent and tenacity of Filipino basketball players.
