Stop Blogging. Start Writing.

There’s one helluva difference.

Writing is as much a skill as an art. Blogging is what used to be done in your private journal. Forget blogging. Start writing. Own photo.

Let me be blunt. Nobody gives a damn about your life. If you insist on writing about your life, you will not be earning any money on Medium or any other site either. You’re not famous. You have not done anything spectacular. Nobody knows you, and nobody cares. In my second year of school, we were all taught to leave out the word ‘I’ as much as possible from our writing. That’s a good rule to follow.

The essense behind what the teacher said was that when we write, we have to leave ourselves out of it as much as possible. Sure it doesn’t matter if we mention one or two things to offer up a personal perspective. It’s when everything we write is about our personal lives. If we’re famous, then it is a different story, but most people aren’t interested in the personal lives of people they don’t know.

Blogging became a thing in the late 90s. A lot of people made a lot of money. It stood for Web-Log. It was a sort of publicized journal in which people wrote about their personal lives. At that point, not many people exposed their inner lives, and so there was a lot of public interest in it. A lot of people made money out of it. Now blog writing is everywhere, and it really is the most boring thing to read. So stop blogging about your opinions and your life. Nobody is interested. That is why you aren’t earning any money.

Many people confuse blogging with writing. To be honest, I loathe being called a blogger. I am not a blogger. I am a writer, and I have been published since about 1962. Blogging didn’t exist in those days.

When you write, you write articles that other people are interested in. They generally conform to the publication you are submitting to. In those days, we submitted to print publications. However, the writing that does best on the web these days is still of the type that one used to submit to print publications, i.e. feature articles.

There are millions of things to write about. Here are some examples that should get you going.
