Finding Balance in the Sacrifices You Make for the Lure of Creativity

The opportunity costs of creating too much (or not enough)

The magic of creating has seduced me.

I have stolen hours to find time to create in the wee hours of the morning, in 15-minute increments between meetings, and late at night while my family sleeps.

These are sacrifices I have been willing to make.

You might be like this, too. Creating as a passion requires dedication and commitment — both of which require time. I don’t care how fast you are at creating; there is always time involved in ideation and execution.

I’m not here to judge creators. I am one. My creativity spans writing blogs and poetry and creating choreographed sequences for the twice-weekly yoga classes I teach.

But, I also have a day job. And a family. It would be irresponsible of me to ignore the fact that the time I spend creating has an opportunity cost.

In what ways are you missing out by spending your time creating?
