Our Team is Growing!

Welcome our new Business Development Manager, Colleen Stabler

My career began in supply chain, logistics, and sales in the agricultural industry. I received my BS in Agribusiness Management from Michigan State University and worked in Asia business development for a produce importer/exporter. It was there, in mid-2016, that I began reading about blockchain and playing around with a few online coding tutorials. I was instantly hooked and pivoted my career to this industry. I received my Masters in Computer Science from Queen Mary University of London, which is when I really dove into all things crypto and blockchain and developed a particular interest in FinTech. I attended many workshops and meet-ups that year and wrote my thesis on Proof-of-Stake scalability in Ethereum. Most recently, I did a 10 week blockchain internship with Western Asset Management company, a large fixed-income investment manager. It was great exposure into different DLT technologies and what the traditional finance industry is doing to disrupt themselves. Now, I’m excited to be working in a role with Totle that will utilize my business and tech background.

I first heard about Bitcoin in late 2013 from a club I was apart of at university, Young Americans for Liberty. This moment is documented in an email to father, expressing how interesting it sounded, and helped me even remember that this occurred! My second exposure to it was in 2016 when it really stuck.

Before finding Totle, I found the user experience and complicated nature of trading very cumbersome. If it took me, someone who had been studying blockchain for months and was very motivated to get involved, many hours to get my wallets, exchange accounts, and trades set up, your average person in the space would easily get lost or unmotivated.

My thesis and ensuing deep dive into Ethereum has made me a strong supporter of their platform. Vitalik and the genius development community behind him continuously drive the platform forward. I think they’ve found a good balance between stagnant innovation, a la Bitcoin, and too fast innovation and too many promises that lead to detrimental bugs and failures, as seen in some competing platforms. They certainly have their priorities straight with focusing on scalability. It’s right up there with user experience in increasing adoption.

A tough question! I think a lot will depend on how scalable blockchain platforms become, how friendly governments are to innovation, and a whole host of other things we may not even know about today. One particular niche I’m excited about in regards to crypto is to see the development of security tokens.

I think like a lot of the other employees, I was convinced the moment I navigated to the Totle trading platform. It was unlike anything else I’d come across, and I knew they were doing it right. As my interviews progressed and I got to know more of the team and projects they are working on, I became even more enthusiastic. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and incredibly knowledgeable. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to join the team!

A long time favorite book that comes to mind is Middlesex, so I will have to say Jeffrey Eugenides. I read the book in a high school English class and still recommend it to this day. A favorite quote is “Stop just assuming you have a full lifetime to do whatever it is you dream of doing” by Scott Riddle. A great reminder to take life by the reins and never make excuses for your dreams.

I’m really passionate about the environment and a plant-based diet. During my Ag days, I got involved in the permaculture movement, which is about creating an agricultural ecosystem that is truly sustainable and self-sufficient. It’s also cool to know that just by eating a plant-based diet for 1.5 years, I’ve saved 530,000 gallons of water and 15,000 square feet of forest! It’s a fun experience to also live in Amsterdam and have the opportunity to bike everywhere.
